Holy Island

If you fancy treating yourself to a day filled with stunning scenery and a wealth of history, a trip to Holy Island is perfect for you!

The coastal island is home to a tiny population of just over 160 people but attracts over half a million visitors every year.

The base of Anglo-Saxon Christianity and victim to numerous Viking raids across the years – the island is surrounded in myths, stories and historical contradictions.

The island is ever-changing, only accessible at certain times of day by a singular causeway – covered twice a day by the crashing waves of the North Sea.

The top attractions on Holy Island include:

Lindisfarne Priory:

The monastery was originally founded by St Aidan in 635AD but is mostly recognised for St Cuthbert’s residency. The birthplace of the famous Lindisfarne Gospels – walk in the footsteps of 7th century monks and experience the serenity of the ruins.

Lindisfarne Castle:

Built on a volcano to defend the Scottish attack in the 1500s, the castle is a fortress. Visible from miles around and part of the iconic scenery of Northumberland. The castle itself boasts breath-taking views of the Northumbrian coastline.
